Based on claims from the official website, Qara’a is the most complete Muslim worship companion application. In the Qara’a application, there are various features that help the worship of a Muslim better.

Qara’a launched the Qara’a Digital Academy (QDA)program at the beginning of the month of Ramadan and Alhamdulillah, I was accepted as one of the awardees after going through a series of selections, one of which was the case study selection.

You can also find it here:

For those who are curious as to what an example of a case study looks like, I will try to describe it below.

Prompt

English Version :

A company is developing an application called Bajik which is useful for reminding users to do charities according to a schedule. The features contained in the Bajik application include:

  • Add a charity schedule based on user choice (Example: Sunnatul fajr prayer, fasting Monday) or create user own charity schedule (Example: Recite 1 juz per day, helping parents)
  • Charity reminder notification
  • Check the charity that has been done and progress in a day
  • Prayer times and adhan

You as a UI/UX Designer are assigned to create an application design. There are two cases that you need to understand:

  1. How do you get users to immediately understand the Bajik application without having to try these features first and what do you need to implement?
  2. What are the design aspects that need to be implemented to make a Bajik application look Islamic?

Overview

Bajik is an application that is being developed with the aim of reminding users to do practices or worship according to a schedule. The features contained in the Bajik application include: adding charity schedules, custom charity schedules, charity reminder notifications, charity checklists, prayer schedules and also the call to prayer schedule.

Research Goal

  • Users understand the Bajik application without needing to try the features in it
  • The Bajik application displays a user interface design with an Islamic feel
  • The features in the Bajik application help users remember the charity to be performed.

Research Hypothesis / Assumption

  • Users don’t understand the Bajik application without trying its features
  • The Bajik application does not apply design elements with Islamic nuances
  • The features in the Bajik application help users remember the charity

Research Current Apps

  1. Yaumi Apps
  • User Interface

  • User Research

The Yaumi app has similar features to the Bajik app. Based on user research on the Google Play Store, in terms of user interface, the Yaumi application is sufficient for user needs.

In addition, the display design of the Yaumi application has an Islamic feel. However, there are still some system bugs that interfere with the user’s comfort in using the Yaumi application.

2. Ibadah Evaluation Apps

  • User Interface

  • User Research

The Ibadah Evaluation application has a very simple user interface but has good functionality making it easier for users to use it.

However, there are still shortcomings, namely a backup system where users should be able to keep track of their worship or charity if one day they use a different device.

Solution

Design implementation (user understands the Bajik application without trying the features)

  1. Using a user guide in the form of an onboarding application
Image 1.7. Upwork

One example of onboarding in the Upwork application that displays a user guide regarding application introduction, user sign-in, and profile settings.

Onboarding application is one way to make users understand the application without having to use the features in it first, so that it is suitable to be implemented in Bajik application which has a variety of features in it.

Onboarding the Bajik application can be filled with application functionality and an explanation of some of its superior features, such as custom practices and backup systems (implementation of additional features).

2. Using a user guide in the form of a tooltip on several features or application menus

Image 1.9. Examples of Tooltip

Some examples of tooltips in applications and websites that are used to help users understand the application.

Tooltip is one of the user guides that a user will usually encounter every time they open or use an application or website.

Tooltips can be implemented in Bajik applications to introduce users to certain menus or features with concise and clear explanations.

  • Bajik application design aspects to have an Islamic feel

Making an application so that it has a taste design that is in accordance with the purpose of making the application is to implement colors, illustrations, or icons that are in accordance with the purpose of the application.

In the Bajik application, if you want to look Islamic, you can use a color palette that is commonly used to describe Islam such as white, beige, or green.

Color palettes that depict Islam can be taken from colorful Islamic ornaments, calligraphy, or other art that depicts the life of the Islamic religion.

Then, to create an Islamic feel in the Bajik application, you can also use Islamic illustrations that match the application, besides that there is no harm in inserting Islamic content in the application such as tips for praying on time, and other supportive content.

Then you can also maximize the notification feature for daily reminders with daily hadiths or mahfudzat at certain hours.

That was a UI/UX Design case study that I made to take part in the Ramadhan Scholarship at the Qara’a Digital Academy.

Thank you for your attention, hopefully it can be useful. If there is any feedback regarding what I wrote, it will certainly help me to make better case studies in the next time. Thank you ^^
